Alana-Tokaj in Volcanic Wines by John Szabo, MS

We are honored to receive the following review from John Szabo, MS, in his new book, Volcanic Wines, Salt, Grit, Terroir (page 245):

“Co-owners Andras and Attila Nemeth, and Andras’ wife Allison, focus on all-estate grown, top-quality late-harvest and aszu wines from unthinkably low yields. Similar extremes are reflected in the winemaking. There’s no attempt to control or adjust, or even analyze the wines at any stage. Alana owns an enviable collection of first-class crus, including sizable parcels of Betsek, Kiraly and Veresek. Base wines for aszus are made mostly from late-harvest Muskotaly and Harslevelu; sugar-rich Zeta is often picked for aszu. Across the range these are wines of singular intensity and monumental sweetness. Even the late-harvest styles often tip over 200 g/l of sugar, while the 2006 Aszu Eszencia (a category that no longer exists) is a balance-defying explosion of orange pekoe tea and essential oil of rose with 316 g/l of sugar.”
